A List Of Obessions

Published 02/11/2011 by Amy
I wish I knew why I feel compelled to record every thing. Like it matters, years from now I’ll look back and know exactly how I was feeling or what the mood of the day was by a word or a picture hidden in a ratty lined notebook or a computer file. I can no longer write in my hand written diary and they stack up high on my bookshelves. I love to run my hands over the soft marked pages, carefully leaf through the bookmarks, pressed flowers, letters from friends, articles and quotes I’ve ripped out of books and newspapers. Nostalgia you in yourself are an obsession. A dearest one to me.

Blind Insight: Organisation.

Published 05/10/2011 by Amy
I did a brief video about this on my youtube channel but as usual, I always have more to say and this time I can add some pictures to visualize what I am actually talking about.

The bathroom:

photo(26)  photo(25)

I’m not a morning person, so organisation in the morning is a really big thing, if something is out of place it can disorientate me so much, it’s unbelievable. It really can make the difference of a good day or a bad day, no one likes to start they day of moody because they can’t find something that’s been misplaced by so much as 30cms.

I’m lucky in a way that the majority of products I use are very distinguishable from each other. I generally use my Philosophy shampoo which is a huge bottle! and easy to find amongst thinner, taller bottles. Most of their products are in similar bottle sizes though so when using the brand for various things it can be a little bit tricky. My Philosophy facial wash is the same size as the shampoo bottle, so it’s a good job, one is by my toothbrush area and the other is in the shower cubical itself. For the last 3 months I’ve been dying my hair so I’m currently going through Pantene’s colour protect, which also luckily is distinguishable from my Pantene conditioner. The lid for the shampoo is located at the top, the conditioner at the bottom, not only a cool aesthetic design, but incredibly helpful too.

As I said in my video, the bathroom is really the only place where I go to the extreme of organizing things. With three of us living in the house, it’s hard to have areas that you can control that wont get messed up.

There are things you can do to help you get organized such as audible labels, for cans and jars, and braille labeling systems where you can braille out your own labels for cupboards or whatever you like really. I’ve also used bright orange gel dots on a measuring jug before I had my talking kitchen scales and talking measuring jug.

My room has never really been very tidy because I live in it a lot of the time, so things are in general use and I’m basically just a messy person and had the kindest parents who pick up after me even now. I have been working on my room though, I tend to do it it bits, an area a day, something like that. It’s a lot better than it used to be, my room is smaller since moving to the back of the house so it’s easier to maintain. I love little tidy boxes/drawers and I will sound really geeky here but I love choosing what to put in each drawer and stuff, so those are really fun and cheap to pick up. I especially love the ones you can decorate yourself. I picked up a glossy white set of 9 drawers from QVC during a craft show and I really wish I had got more than one set, they are so useful.

We did it.

Ellie, mum and I completed are ‘go for 80′ challenge to celebrate 80 years of partnerships in the UK. It was a lovely, warm sunny day and you could hear the autumn leaves rustling in a light breeze. The park was pretty empty just a few people around with their dogs, off their leads.

The council had blocked off one of the bridges we had incorporated into our route because it was deemed unsafe. So we had to do more of an elongated circle, rather than the ’8′ circuit that we had planned. Never mind. We all got a bit bored of this shorter route. Ellie, like most Guide Dogs doesn’t like going over the same route so she kept going really slow and towards the end I was getting a tad annoyed. Still no use in getting moody with a typical toddler attitude. You just try encouraging her, sound positive when shes doing what you want and yank the harness when she’s doing something wrong, so she knows that it’s wrong. Usually a stern voice command will do, ‘Now’ always gets her attention, but I make it a habit of yanking the harness if she’s doing something really wrong, just to keep her in check, knowing who’s boss and that if I need to I will use more than just verbal commands.

The first half hour went really slowly really, the park was very quiet and it was surprisingly warm, we tried to alternate the route, even going through the side car park to jam it up a little. By contrast the last half hour went much quicker, my grandparents came down and did a lap with me and we talked as we walked which made it go much quicker.

It’s going to rain on Friday which was my alternative day if the weather wasn’t good today. I think we would have preferred walking in the rain, much cooler and we can splash in puddles. Ellie and I aren’t good in warm weather, the sun makes my white haze, orange and when you pass a tree or branch it goes black. It’s a really uncomfortable, sick inducing feeling with orange and black flashes. Also it makes me picture big spiders and I absolutely hate big spiders. I think Ellie just doesn’t like the heat because it’s hard work, she’s a long haired golden retriever and her ears bother her a lot, well, wouldn’t yours bother you if you had that much hair tickling them all day?.

After we had finished, we walked to the bakery and got a sticky bun. Mine had pink icing and it was delicious, really should of had it before, then I would have walked it off, kind of defeats the object walking for 80 minutes then eating sugar, but never mind. Was good all the same.

This afternoon I’ve been making videos for this week, sometimes it’s not possible to sit down with a camera each day and talk about a topic, so I try to plan in advance and film them when I can, when it’s quiet in the house or usually when the technology I am sharing and talking about is charged. Because this is my life and I use these things in day to day life, so they are being used and have to be charged and can’t just be plucked from a store room shelf and given a brief overview. I like to go all over the product and make it as if you are in the room with me or you’re using it yourself and it’s just my hands pressing the buttons, but it might as well be yours. Or if I’m explaining how I became blind or what’s happening this week, I want to make sure I’m not tired and boring people to tears. It works best making videos in the morning, editing them over lunch and uploading them while I’m blogging in the afternoon. Then I have the rest of the day to myself plus the weekends of course.

This afternoon I’ve made 2 videos to be posted tomorrow and Wednesday. The first is about how a blind/visually impaired person makes a hot and cold drink safely, the second is about one of my favourite gadgets, The Looky! and I’ll be showing you all around it’s uses and buttons.

Now I’m off to make a pear crumble and another drink!

Lula favs and Missguided

Published 30/09/2011 by Amy
Today has been a really fun day. I knew it would have to be a better one than yesterday, I was having so much trouble blogging on my iPad, well, ok more due to the fact iPads don’t have flash and the majority of the picture uploading sites and blogging sites I inhabit all have flash in them, apparently, somewhere. I was in disillusion with how much flash was out there before purchasing my computer replacement. I’m still happy with my iPad though, it does everything I need it to do, and even mum has to use 2 different devices to get her jobs done. So I’m ‘mainstream and normal’. If I do everything on my iPad except use the Macbook for editing and importing pictures. I don’t get how I can ‘upload’ videos but not pictures, sense much?.

So I digress.. My second Lula magazine came today and it’s as awesome and pretty as the last one, which reminds me, I need to take photos of my favs in that one too and add to Pinterest as I have done with today’s issue. I thought I’d share some of my favourites with you lovely people.

I took the photos using the back camera on the iPad which is supposed to have better quality. I was just trying it out, I may go back over and take photos with my Lumix 10MP camera which will hopefully do the awesome photography justice. I love the fun and playfulness of Lula, it’s sad they only do 2 issues a year, but then you get super excited when it arrives in the post, it’s like Christmas or Birthday!.

My little package from Beauty Bay also arrived in the mail today. Go Nails, also something I heard about from Sara’s channel and as my nails are pretty much non existent, anything is worth a try. It’s a little pricey at nearly £20 for one product, but the bottle is bigger than the picture looks so I’m actually happy to pay that for the size, and if it works too I may go back for some more. It’s a 10 day treatment that stimulates growth and strength. The idea is to put one little pump on each finger and thumb obviously, and rub it into the cuticle and all over the nail and top of the finger twice a day for 10 days. So I’ll take a picture of my hands today, which is the first day of use, and then again in 10 days and post the before and after and a mini product review on it.
I had a little promotional discount code for Missguided.co.uk along with my Go Nails. I hadn’t heard of it so I thought I’d check it out, not expecting to be that interested, let alone buy anything, but it was right up my street, vintage dresses, wedge shoes, hair accessories and celeb/high street trends. I made good use of the 10% discount code and bought some beauties. Should be with me mid-week so I can do a photoshoot post with my pretty clothes. I keep meaning to do an outfit a day, but I’ve been living and dying in my Be Beau peter pan black collar dresses with different colour cardies so not really much variety for an ‘outfit of the day’ section.

Now I’m chilling out to Lada Gaga, like you do ‘don’t want to paper gangta’. My easily addicted and obsessive personality is on overload over at Pinterest right now, oh dear.

That’s it for now but I did make a video over on my youtube channel earlier about what caused me to be blind so if you are interested you can go and check that out and leave comments if ya like

Have a great weekend folks.

Food And eReaders

Published 20/09/2011 by Amy
I am stuffed, I just ate the stir fry I meant to make for dinner last night, and ended up having for lunch today. It was tasty, I love peppers, green ones, yellow ones, orange ones, but not red ones, nope nope nope, I wish I knew why I can eat peppers and have no problems but when I eat cucumbers my ibs flares up. Weird, well I guess that is just me.
Looking good.

So my topic for today is e-readers and how important reading is for blind people as much as it is for sighted people. About 10 years ago I lost the ability to read paperback books and text books, which had never been that easy anyway, but I could manage with a magnifier and lots and lots of time. Reading has always been one of my favourite things and as you can imagine, I was totally lost without it. When the magnifier didn’t do it’s job anymore I was devastated and it left me void of interests. I couldn’t read magazines or the books my friends were reading, and I prefer to read the news in my own time, and articles I’m interested in, not just listening to what the BBC or SKY think is interesting.
I didn’t feel I could ask my friends or my parents to read a book I was interested in, it never occurred to me but I’m sure they would have if I’d asked, short novels anyway. I felt I was missing out and things just weren’t accessible. When I first started working with my ROVI I was introduced to the daisy player and audio books on CD, this was okay for awhile but the limited and outdated books didn’t really fill the hole and CDs are as annoying as cassette tapes were having to change them all the time.
I’m not sure how I came across Audible but I’m so thankful that I did, just when I was at rock bottom, there it was, offering me latest books, books that my friends were into, classics, all genres imaginable, I signed up and started downloading them onto my iPod shuffle and it was fantastic, it was like being free and running around without any obstacles.
Then after a year or so of using that my mum and I started reading up about the Amazon Kindle, a friend had recommended it to us before, but we didn’t really think it would work, if it would enlarge the text or if you could invert it and have white text on black background, which I find helps and takes the glare away. We came across it in a Staples shop while buying some stationary supplies for Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes and the sales person showed us around it, and that it did in fact enlarge the text big enough for me to read, but it doesn’t invert it, but it’s not a bright white page anyway, so even in sunlight it doesn’t glare. I saved up over a few months and got the wifi one and haven’t looked back since, I love it and would recommend it to anybody. I also have the Kindle app on my iPhone and my mac so that I can listen/read it on different formats depending on where I am and what I’m doing. I often listen to a book while emailing/facebooking. My favourite authors are Phillip Pullman, Ted Dekker, Markus Zusak and Michael Morpurgo.
I can buy and download books from my computer by myself but I do need help opening the books on the Kindle as the menu is tiny, well I don’t think it’s even there but mum assures me that there is a list there, and then she can put the text up, if it’s reset itself to small again, then I’m away, letting my imagination go crazy and loving being able to read and be like every one else again.
Listening to audio books is very liberating it means you can get your housework done while enjoying a book, with paperback books you need to take time out from everything to just sit and read, so I think it’s something that everyone can appreciate and enjoy not just visually impaired people. I go back and forth between Audible and Kindle because not every title I want to read is available on one but is usually on the other. Hopefully in the future all titles will be available on all formats but I am happy with the results so far. I don’t believe visually impaired people will ever be equal to sighted people in every aspect of their lives, it’s impossible but this is a great step forward, and progress is being made every day.
I use my Braillepen12 mostly on my phone to read texts, emails and apps, when I get more confident with it and more familiar with grade 2. I hope to use it on my mac as well, but at the moment I am much faster just listening to the Voice Over and as I can touch type, thanks to primary school! I am pretty quick on the Qwerty. Braillereaders are incredibly expensive and not always available in the UK this site has a few (it’s where I got my Braillepen12) and if you are new to Braille I recommend the Braillepen12, because it’s portable, lightweight  and gives you 12 cells to start off with reading it’s also the cheapest available in the UK.
More about my experience with e-readers.

Have a great day :)

I Need These Glasses, Like Yesterday

Published 13/09/2011 by Amy
It’s days like these I could really use a pair of these! (£79/$100 worth of confidence)
I know I posted the video on my facebook and hinted heavily to my friends and family that if they were inclined to club together to get me a birthday/christmas present this year, this would be my number one choice. I thought I had blogged about it to, but seems not. Slap on the wrist for that, these babies deserve an entire blog devoted to them not just one post but here we go.

Today, Ellie and I were enjoying a nice brisk walk in the local park, half way around I walked straight into an over growing branch or hedge… something with lots of leaves and tastes icky. I’m thankful I wear my sunnies every time I go out because I seriously could have lost an eye!.
Having a Guide Dog is awesome, but they only let you know about stuff on your right and generally waist down, so you’re vulnerable from the waist up, which is where I generally get things.. IN THE FACE like today. Now these awesome iGlasses made by British and Canadian geeks would solve our problems. They are a secondary aid that protects you from the waist up, you do need to use them with a cane or Guide Dog they can’t be used on their own. They look like any ordinary sunglasses, but they have a very clever difference.
They vibrate to let you know something is in front of you and depending on how close you are to it, the higher the frequency becomes. There’s no noise pollution so you can still completely rely on your hearing as you would normally, which is a relief because I use it a lot for traffic.

Here is an awesome iGlasses video,

These are definitely on my ‘must get’ list. Right now.. I’m off to find an iPhone app that  will tell me the colours of things, which will help me get dressed and wear less boring clothes, my wardrobe is full of jeans and black hoodies to make it easier. I was reading this on a blog I follow and this has to be a cheaper option to the hand held device you can get, which a friend has and she uses it to tell her cats apart from each other.

I’m off to enjoy the handbag hour over at QVC and put the finishing touches on my Charlie Bear post, coming soon.
