Collections, do you collect anything?

Published 26/02/2012 by Amy

I didn’t really collect anything as a child but I seem to collect all sorts of things these days and I probably should put my time and savings account to a better use. I received an email from the Royal Mail the other day, not really sure why but it doesn’t really matter, the point is, they were advertising the official Roald Dahl stamp collection coming out and it included The BFG which was one of my favourites, if not my favourite book through my childhood so I couldn’t resist. I had a good look around and was pleased to see that they do variations, normal size stamps would be pointless collecting as I couldn’t see them to enjoy collecting, but when I stumbled across postcard stamps it was an eureka moment.

I grabbed The BFG postcard stamps and also had a browse around to see what else they had. They don’t seem to keep a lot of stock collection online, mostly because they are limited edition type things. I picked up a pack that has Terry Pratchett’s DiscWorld characters in, also Harry Potter, Narnia and Arthurian legend characters, which don’t seem to be available anymore, The Age of The Hanovarians, The Age of The Windsor’s and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and lastly Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee pack. If you’re interested to see what packs they have or what’s coming up soon check out www.royalmail.com they do presentation packs, all sorts.

I thought I’d share some of my favourite on here. Do you collect anything? Leave a comment and share your collections :) I have a video on my youtube, you could leave a video response to that if you like.

A List Of Obessions

Published 02/11/2011 by Amy
I wish I knew why I feel compelled to record every thing. Like it matters, years from now I’ll look back and know exactly how I was feeling or what the mood of the day was by a word or a picture hidden in a ratty lined notebook or a computer file. I can no longer write in my hand written diary and they stack up high on my bookshelves. I love to run my hands over the soft marked pages, carefully leaf through the bookmarks, pressed flowers, letters from friends, articles and quotes I’ve ripped out of books and newspapers. Nostalgia you in yourself are an obsession. A dearest one to me.

I’ve been a little hesitant to share my fashion thoughts and creations on my blog. I know it’s stupid. The whole point of this blog is to express my interests, and share them as well as pepper it with a few posts here and there about life and experiences being blind and helpful tips and aids I find helpful, that might help other people out there who are interested.

I realise that on the internet there is a lot of ‘hate culture’ out there, being behind a screen can affect you the same way alcohol can and it takes away your inhibitions. You can be b****y to complete strangers and not think about it afterwards, which you’d probably, almost likely never do person to person. I guess, the reason why I haven’t posted much fashion wise is because I don’t want tonnes of comments on calling me a liar, how can I be blind and into fashion?. I can’t explain it, I just am, but for some reason I’ve decided I don’t care if people ask me that, if they are that interested they can read up on the facts about 1 in 4 registered blind people having residual sight and the reason only 25% of us are working is because the majority are working in specialised ‘pigeon holed’ places like blind charities and blind aid companies. PS. No one is hiring ANYone these days so change the record.
I suppose it is a pretty weird and unexpected thing for a blind person to be interested in fashion, it just doesn’t sound right and even I can’t really explain why I’m interested in it. There have been times when I wished I wasn’t blind so that I could just buy platinum tickets to London Fashion Week and watch the catwalk shows and be a part of this fantasy, creative, inspirational and fun world. But if I did, it would be a waste, not just of money but because I wouldn’t be able to experience the whole amazingness. A girl, and her guide dog, front row at a catwalk in the middle of London Fashion Week?. Probably sounds as unlikely as the thought of fashion bloggers five years ago. My knowledge of fashion and designers is practically zero but that doesn’t stop me from liking the things I like and questioning the sanity of things I don’t.

It’s something that has been in my life since secondary school but I’ve pushed it down for my own reasons. I didn’t have access to fashion magazines, and it’s really only in the last few years, I’ve got my dose of it online with various fashion sites and fashion blogs. I can’t always see the clothes, more to the point what colours they are, I can’t distinguish blue/black/brown and some dark greens, which is a big problem haha.
I really enjoy reading or I suppose technically listening to bloggers and editors discussing the shows and the lines on their sites/blogs, it’s like an audio commentary. My fashion interest and style is really limited to being online because I have a mental block that curbs me offline. I like looking at colours, and putting bits together on sites like Polyvore and browsing endlessly at various clothing sites because they are right in my face, seriously my screen is like huge. But put me in a shop and I have no idea what’s in front of me. I’m slightly jealous of everyone who can just walk down the street and look at what other people are wearing.

My mental curb for my fashion and style being only online is faith based. I don’t want to get into vain temptation and blow money on clothes and basically myself, I want to give and help other people, which is why most of my clothes are thrifted and I dress like the most fashion-uninterested person, so the money I would blow on clothes and bags, I’m a sucker for bags can go to people who really need it. Also I don’t believe in storing up treasure and money in this world where it can be stolen or eaten by moths.

Fashion is fun it’s another creative outlet, and it doesn’t matter that some people might not get your style or you don’t have 101 accessories in your daily outfit and that’s so ‘against the fashion laws’. Make yourself happy, forget the rest of the fashion conscious for once.

My Kingdom For A Typewriter!!!

Anyone who knows me knows that I like and collect typewriters. No need for MCP certification for me! Old school is unappreciated. I can’t explain my obsession but there it is I admit, it is an obsession. But I haven’t just LIKED and shared this video solely on it’s awesome typewriter. This in my weird random way, reminded me of a conversation I had with my mum a few years ago about her younger brother and I think it was his first car or something. Now my uncle is a fairly big guy not sure how tall exactly but it’s fair to say that he has a distinct presence. And the car in question was a Mini. So yeah, you can imagine the comedic value of a big guy folding himself into a half-pint car. Watching this video with the guy in his boat with his typewriter, made me think of that conversation. I told you, I was a bit random in my thinking. You were warned. So I hope you enjoy this cool stylistic animation of love that finds it’s way, eventually. In the most unexpected way.
